One day after skiing, Pat and I stop into Mi Chola for après nachos. We slide into the bar in our beanies and base layers next to a bickering couple who clearly aren’t from here. You can tell from their bedazzled jeans and too-clean cowboy boots. We’re all bingeing on the happy hour food deals that are nice if you’re visiting and necessary if you’re not. Pat, who is usually effervescent, has seemed down all week, and halfway through our chips he opens up about his worries for the next winter, and the rest of his life. What happens if they can’t live in the Chalet? What happens if he doesn’t want to sling beers and give ski lessons forever? He wants a good life, like the one he grew up believing in, but he might not be able to do that here even though being here is the whole point.

On one hand, it’s illogical to feel bad for the dudes whose dirtbag fantasy dissolved around them, but as we finish our beers I’m uncomfortable pushing on Pat’s pain points. Paepcke’s utopia was built on the idea of having space and time for reflection, to try to find ways to make the world more just, beautiful, and good. It’s brutally ironic that the town that he loved has become one of the most economically divided places in the country.
